ગોખલામાંપડેલગણેશનીમૂર્તિનેકેશુબાપાએકીટશેજોઈરહ્યા. મૂર્તિનાહાથ-પગ-નાકહવાપાણીનામારથીખવાઈગયાંહતાં. આમૂર્તિનેઆમતોતેઓકેટલાંયવરસથીજોતાઆવ્યાછે, પણઆરીતેપહેલીજવારજોઈ.<br />
નોકરરામલોડોશીનેલઈઆવ્યો. ચારવરસપહેલાંઆઘરનીબધીચીજવસ્તુનેપોતાનાહાથથીસ્પર્શીલઈનેએકુષ્ઠધામમાંગયેલી—પોતેપાછીનહીંફરેએખ્યાલથી. પણઆજેઘેરપાછીઆવીશકીતેથીતેનીખુશીનોપારનહોતો.<br />
“આવબેટા, બંકા.” કહીડોશીએહાથલંબાવ્યો. પણબંકોહાલ્યોનહીંઅનેપોતાનીમાસામેજોતોરહ્યો. “એતોભૂલીગયોછેનેતેથી,” કહેતાંવહુએબંકાનેપાછોખેંચ્યો.<br />
ડોશીએહસતાંહસતાંભાણીનેકહ્યું, “બેટા, ગાલેમનેચૂમીદે.”<br />
“મૂઈકોઈનીપાસેજતીજનથીને!” ફોઈએભાણીનેજોરથીપકડીરાખતાંકહ્યું.<br />
“હવેતુંહાથપગધોઈઆરામકર.” કેશુબાપાબોલ્યા.<br />
“મારેવળીઆરામકેવો? લાવ, મારીગાયનેજોઈઆવું.” અનેડોશીગમાણભણીચાલ્યાં. કેશુબાપાપણપાછળપાછળગયા. ગમાણમાંડોસાનેઆંખભરી-ભરીનેજોઈડોશીબોલ્યાં, “તમારીતબિયતઘણીઊતરીગઈછે.”<br />
“એતોચિંતાનેકારણે.”<br />
“શાનીચિંતા?” કહીડોશીજરીકનજીકસરક્યાં. પણકેશુબાપાલાગલાજએકડગલુંપાછળહઠીગયા, અનેગાયનેચારોનીરવાલાગીગયા. ડોશીમનોમનહસી: “આતોએવાનેએવાજશરમાળરહ્યા!”<br />
ડોશીરસોડામાંગયાં. “લાવ, લોટમસળું.”<br />
“ના, એમણેતમનેકશુંજકામકરવાનીનાપાડીછે.”<br />
ડોશીહસ્યાં. “અરે, કુષ્ઠધામમાંહુંઘડીકપણપગવાળીનેબેસતીનહોતી.”<br />
“પણતમારેશુંકામકરવુંપડે? તમેઆરામકરો.”<br />
સાંજેડોશીગાયદોહવાબેઠાં, ત્યાંદીકરોતડૂક્યો, “દાક્તરેકહ્યુંછેકેતમારેઆરામનીજરૂરછે.”<br />
“અરે, કુષ્ઠધામમાં૧૫-૨૦જણનીરસોઈહુંજબનાવતી!”<br />
“ના, અહીંનહીં,” કહીદીકરાએદોણીઆંચકીલીધી. ડોશીનેએનાઅવાજમાંથોડીસખ્તાઈપણલાગી. એનેગમ્યુંનહીં. એણેમનોમનનક્કીકર્યુંકેઆજતોઠીક, કાલથીએકોઈનુંનહીંસાંભળે; ઘરપોતાનુંછે.<br />
અનેસવારેઊઠીએણેરોટલાઘડીનાખ્યાઅનેઝાડુલઈસફાઈમાંલાગીગયાં. બધાંજમીરહ્યાબાદસાસુવહુજમવાબેઠાં. વહુએભૂખનથી, એમકહીમાત્રદાળભાતલીધા. રોટલાનીથાળીસાસુભણીઠેલી.<br />
“બધાંનેરોટલાકેવાલાગ્યા?”<br />
“બાપ-દીકરોકહેતાહતાકેસરસહતા.”<br />
ડોશીનોચહેરોખીલુંખીલુંથઈઊઠ્યો. “કામકરવાનીમૂઈઆદતપડીગઈ. બેસીશીરીતેરહેવાય? વહુ, જરાદાળનીતપેલીલાવતો.”<br />
“થોભો, હુંપીરસુંછું.” કહીવહુચૂપકીદીથીસાસુનાહાથનાંઆંગળાંજોઈરહીહતી. નખનેટેરવાંબધાંખવાઈચૂક્યાંહતાં.<br />
સાંજેડોશીદોણીશોધવાલાગ્યાં, પણક્યાંયજડીનહીં. છેલ્લેઊચીઅભરાઈએદેખાઈ. લોટનોડબ્બોપણમાંજીનેમુકાયોહતો. ગમાણમાંજોયુંતોગાયનીપાસેપોતાનાઘડેલાઆઠ-દસરોટલાપડ્યાહતા. ડોશીહેબતાઈજગયાં. રાતેએનેગળેકોળિયોનઊતર્યો. પાણીપીનેઊભાંથઈગયાં. સૂવાનાઓરડામાંગયાં, તોબેપથારીબેહાથનાઅંતરેપાથરેલીહતી. ડોશીનેઝાળલાગીગઈ. એણેડોસાનીપથારીપોતાનીઅડોઅડખેંચીલીધીઅનેએપથારીમાંહાથલાંબોકરીનેસૂઈગયાં.<br />
રાતેમોડેથીકેશુબાપાકથામાંથીઆવ્યા. હળવેકથીએમણેપોતાનીપથારીડોશીથીદૂરસરકાવીલીધી. ડોશીનોહાથજમીનપરપડ્યો. પણએનેકેમઅડાય? એનેએમનેમનીચેપડ્યોરહેવાદઈડોસાઊઘીગયા.<br />
મધરાતેડોશીજાગ્યાંહશે. અડધીઊઘમાંજપોતાનોહાથબાજુમાંપસવાર્યો; પણડોસાનાડિલનેબદલેએજમીનસાથેજઘસાયો. ડોશીસફાળાંબેઠાંથઈગયાં. બેહાથદૂરપથારીમાંડોસાનસકોરાંબોલાવતાહતા. જાણેડોશીનુંઆખુંએકઅંગજઅપંગથઈગયું.<br />
