યાદદાસ્ત પણ અવળચંડી જ છે ના! ખોખરી એવી ‘સુંદરી’ (સારંગી)ને ખોળામાં લઈને અંત્યજ નથુ તૂરી બેસતો, અને બે રાભડાં છોકરાંમાંથી એકને ધવરાવતી ધવરાવતી નથુની ચૂંચી આંખોવાળી લઘરવઘર વહુ બેસતી. બેય જણાં ખરજ અને પંચમ સૂરવાળાં ગળાં મેળવીને [રાણપુરના સૌરાષ્ટ્ર] કાર્યાલયના નાનકડા ચોકની હરિયાળી પર —<br />
લાવો લાવો રે બાદૂરખાં મિયાં હિંદવાણી <br />
એને આવતાં મેં તો જાણી લાલ હિંદવાણી<br />
એવું કોઈ મુસ્લિમ દરબારને રીઝવવાને માટેનું ગીત પણ ગાતાં, (જે ગીતે મને ‘આવો આવો રે બહાદુર આ બહેન હિંદવાણી’ એવા ‘વેણીનાં ફૂલ’વાળા રાષ્ટ્રગીતનો ઝૂલતો-મલપતો ઢાળ આપ્યો) અને બીજે છેડે સંત દાસી જીવણનાં ભજનો પણ ગાતાં. આ રહ્યું નથુએ ગાયેલું એ ભજન —<br />
મુંને માર્યાં નેણાંનાં બાણ રે, <br />
વાલ્યમની વાતુંમાં. <br />
વાલ્યમ! તારી વાતુંમાં <br />
હાંકી મેલ્યાં હૂંડી વા’ણ રે, <br />
શામળા! તારી શોભાનાં.<br />
1<br />
જીવણ કે’ પાંચ તતવને ત્રણ ગુણનું <br />
તેનું હરિએ બનાવ્યું વા’ણ; <br />
મરજીવા થૈને માથે બેઠા, <br />
એવાં હરિએ હોકાર્યાં હૂંડી વા’ણ રે <br />
વાલ્યમની વાતુંમાં.<br />
2<br />
જીવણ કે’ શઢ ચડાવી કર્યું સાબદું <br />
મુંને આવી મળ્યા સરાણ; <br />
વાભું કરીને વા’લે ઘા કર્યો <br />
મારે ભળહળ ઊગ્યા રવિભાણ રે <br />
વાલ્યમની વાતુંમાં.<br />

જીવણ કે’ ગુરુ કાયામાં ગોતજો <br />
મારા વાલ્યમનાં શાં કરું વખાણ! <br />
દસમે દરવાજે ડેરી બિરાજે <br />
રાખો ધોળી ધજાનાં પરમાણ રે <br />
વાલ્યમની વાતુમાં.<br />

જીવણ કે’ ગુરુ મળ્યા ને ગુરુગમ જડ્યો <br />
મુંને મટી ગઈ તાણાવાણ્ય; <br />
દાસી જીવણ સંત ભીમનાં ચરણાં <br />
પ્યાલા પાયાનાં પરમાણ રે <br />
વાલ્યમની વાતુંમાં.<br />
તે પછી નથુનાં ગાયેલ બીજાં ભજનોનો આખો ચોસર માંડેલો છે. ત્યારે પડેલાં બીજમાંથી અઢાર–વીસ વર્ષે આજ આંબો ફાલે છે. લોકસાહિત્યનો સંસ્કાર એકલી શૌર્યની વાતોએ, એકલા દુહાએ, એકલા પ્રેમશૃંગારના છકડિયાએ નહીં પણ ભજનો વડે ય સર્વદેશીય વારિસિંચનથી પોષાતો હતો. આજે ફળ બેઠાં છે. ભજનવાણીની ઘડ મગજમાં બેઠી છે.<br />
નથુ અને એની ચૂંચી આંખોવાળી વહુ, બે છોકરાં, ખોખરી સુંદરી, ખરજ અને પંચમ સ્વરોની એ જોડલી અત્યારે ક્યાં છે? જીવતાં છે કે મૂઆં? (આ લખ્યા પછી જાણ્યું કે નથુ ગયો છે, વહુ બેઠી છે.)<br />
એ તો હતો ભટકતો પરિવાર. નાના નાના ઠાકોરોની ડેલીઓ પર એ કુટુંબ નભતું હતું. વર્ષોથી એ વધેલી હજામતવાળો નથુ નજરે નથી પડ્યો. એની ‘સુંદરી’ કોઈને વારસામાં દઈ ગયો નહીં હોય? પરંપરાઓ આમ જ તૂટે છે, એક જાય છે, તેની જગ્યા લેવા બીજો આવતો નથી. ઊઘડો નવાં પાનાં!<br />
