But this would be to raise a point of scientific interest which, with many others relating to the lost historical and political significance of certain nursery rhymes, are perhaps better left unnoticed in such collection as this. Else like those two devoted babes, these songs and rhymes might, beneath too curious and serious an enquiry, lose some of that savour of unreason which is their pleasantest quality. Taken for their own sake, they will be found most fresh, most sweet, and often musically persistent to the memory. For, to quote Mr. W. B. Yeats : ‘When all is said and done, how we do not know but that our own unreason may be better than another’s truth! For it has been warmed on our hearts and in our souls, and is ready for the wild bees of truth to hive in it and make their sweet honey.”)
