‘ધ રેવન’

(સવૈયાની ચાલ)

એકવાર સૂનમૂન મધરાતે થાક્યો હું વાંચું એકાન્તે

ભુલાયેલા પ્રાચીનગ્રંથો ઊથલાવું, વારંવાર

‘હશે કોક આગન્તુક’ બબડું, મારા ઘરને દ્વાર !

એટલું જ બસ, બીજું કશું નહીં.

મને રજેરજ યાદ બરાબર, હતો ડિસેમ્બર, રાત હિમસભર

અંગારો અક્કેક બુઝાતો રચે ભોંય પર પડછાયાનાં ભૂત !

વિરલ રૂપ, ફરિસ્તે દીધું નામ બધું યે લુપ્ત !

સદા ય માટે નામહીન અહીં.

આમતેમ જાંબલી ફરફરતા મખમલી રેશમ પડદા ઊડતા

કદી યે નહીં એવા કોઈ ભયનો પ્રસરાવે છે કંપ !

મોડે મોડે આવ્યું છે આગન્તુક ઘરને દ્વાર !

એટલું જ બસ, બીજું કશું નહીં.

Presently my soul grew stonger; hesitating then no longer,

"Sir,’ said I, ‘‘or Madam, truly your forgiveness | implore;

That I scarce was sure I heard you’ - here I opened wide the door; -

Darkness there and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,

Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;

‘‘Lenore !’

Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,

Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.

Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;-

‘T is the wind and nothing more !’

હવે હૈયામાં આવી હામ અવઢવ મારી ગઈ તમામ

જે હો તે હો તમે, પ્રાર્થું કે ક્ષમા કરી દ્યો લગાર !

માંડ સાંભળી શક્યો, ઉઘાડી સાવ દીધાં મેં ઘરનાં દ્વાર

અંધકાર ત્યાં બીજું કશું નહીં.

તાકી ઊભો ઊંડા અંધારે લાંબો સમય વિસ્મયભય ભારે

શંકાકુશંકા, સ્વપ્નું જોતો પૂર્વે ન કોએ હિમંત કરી પલવાર

સહેજ ઉચ્ચાર્યું નામ પછી તો પડઘાઓની પાછી આવે હાર !

કેવળ આ જ બીજું કશું નહીં.

સહેજ ફરું હું પાછે પગલે હૃદય મારું ઉદ્વેગથી પ્રજળે

ફરી થયો ત્યાં પહેલા કરતાં વધુ ટકોરો મોટો-નો અણસાર

ઘડીક હૃદય જંપે તો મારે ઉકેલવા છે ગૂંચવાયેલા તાર !

માત્ર પવન છે, બીજું કશું નહીં.

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,

In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;

Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -

Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,

By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,

Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian Shore !’

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore.’

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear dicourse so plainly,

Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore;

With such name as ‘Nevermore.’

ખોલું ફટાક હું બારી આવી ફટર ફટર પાંખો ફફડાવી

વન્ય કાગ કોઈ પુરાતન તરત પ્રવેશી જવા ઊભો તૈયાર

એથિનાના પૂતળા ઉપર ઊતર્યો જઈને ઘરને દ્વાર !

ઊતર્યો, બેઠો, બીજું કશું નહીં.

કાળાસીસમ કાગને નીરખ્યો, ભયઓથાર સ્મિતમાં પલટ્યો

દીઠો એનો સાવ ઠાવકો ગંભીર, જ્યાં મુખ-ભાગ !

નરક-ભોમના ભટકું, તારું નામ કહે તું કાગ ?

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

સાદો સીધો પંખીનો શબ્દ, સૂણી થયો હું ઝાઝો સ્તબ્ધ,

એના ઉત્તરમાં થોડો કંઈ અર્થ હતો, કંઈ સાર !

નામ જેનું છે ‘કદી નહીં.’

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only

That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.

On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.’

Then the bird said, ‘Nevermore.’

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,

‘Doubtless,’ said I, ’what it utters is its only stock and store

Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore -

Till the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore Of ‘‘Never - nevermcre."

But the Raven still beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,

Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;

Meant in croaking ‘Nevermore.’

શાંત પૂતળે એકલદોકલ બેસી કાગ ઊચર્યો જે પલ

એક શબ્દમાં એણે એનો રેડી દીધો પ્રાણ !

જેમ ઊડી આશાઓ મારી તું પણ કાલે ઊડી જશે અણજાણ !

પંખી કહે કે કદી નહીં.

ઉચિત ઉત્તરે શાંતિભંગ રહી ગયો હું થોડો દંગ

નિઃશંક આ પંખીને મળી છે મિલ્કત કેવળ એક

જેની સઘળી આશાઓના થયા મરશિયા છેક !

ને વહે ભાર એ ‘કદી નહીં.’

વન્ય કાગ હજી ય ના હટે તરંગ મારા સ્મિતમાં પલટે

ખુરશી નજીક લીધી જ્યાં છે પંખી, પૂતળું, દ્વાર !

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing

To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core;

But whose velvet-violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o’er,

She shall press, ah, nevermore !

Then, methodught, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer

Swung by seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.

Quaff, oh, quatf this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore !’

Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’

‘Prophet! said I, ‘thing of evil ! - prophet still, if bird or devil !-

Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,

Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’

આમ કલ્પતો બેસી રહું છું મુખેથી ના કંઈ જ કહું છું

આગ ઓકતી આંખ પંખીની ભરે હૃદયમાં ઝાળ !

મખમલ ઘાતક મખમલ ઉપર દીવા તેજનો ઢાળ !

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

મને થયું કે હવા ઘેરી થઈ અદીઠ કો ખુશ્બૂ છવાઈ ગઈ

કોઈ ફરિસ્તે આવી છાંટી, સૂણ્યો પદરણકાર !

પીણું પી, તું લુપ્ત લનોરની સ્મૃતિનો કર સંહાર !

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

પયગંબર, શયતાન કે તું ? પંખી કે પિશાચ છે તું ?

તું પ્રપંચી ? કે તોફાને ફંગોળ્યો આ પાર ?

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

‘Prophet !" said I, ‘thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil !

By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore -

Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.’

Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’

‘Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend !’ I shrieked, upstarting -

‘Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore !

Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door !’

Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

Shall be lifted - nevermore !

પયગંબર, શયતાન કે તું ? પંખી કે પિશાચ છે તું?

ઉપર છાયા નભના, આપણ બંનેના, ઈશ્વરના સોગંદ

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

બનો શબ્દ એ વિદાયવાણી ઊભા થઈ પાડી બૂમ તાણી

પાછો જા તોફાન મહીં, જા નરકરાતની પાર !

કાગ કહે કે ‘કદી નહીં.’

પણ ના ઊડે કાગ જરીયે બેઠો હજીયે બેઠો હજીયે

એથિનાના કાળા પૂતળે બેઠો ઘરને દ્વાર !
